While the Cat in the Hat can read with his eyes shut, typical skilled readers cannot (unless they are reading Braille!) Instead, our eyes make a series of stops (called "fixations") and jumps (called "saccades") to bring the fine details of the lines and curves on the page into greater focus for processing.
