Citation indexing allows us to get a sense of how much impact a particular title, author or journal has had in the discipline by searching through the bibliographies of articles, books, conference proceedings et al.  Caution: citation indexing, like all indexing, is only as good as what is being indexed. Results often vary greatly from source to source.
