DOIs for Article Citations

A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique letter and number combination that identifies a specific article.  It's similar to an ISBN for a book.  You can typically find a DOI in an article's database record as well as the PDF of the article's full-text.

In previous editions of ASA style, you only included a DOI for electronic-only journal articles. In the 2022 edition, it broadens this to articles found online.  If you are unsure whether to include a DOI or not, ask your instructor.  The DOI goes at the end of the citation.

Example:

Comfort, Megan, and Troy Williams. 2018. "After Life Imprisonment: Reentry in the Era of Mass Incarceration." Contemporary Sociology 47(3):343-345. doi.org/10.1177/0094306118767651dd.
